Usually ships in 24 hours | | | GREAT GFR | | for the last GFR to come out in the 70`s it was indeed a GREAT cd they thought BTD was going to be the last just GREAT song writes by mark and don just couldn`t wait was a GREAT tune and goin for the pastor was fantastic but one thing to this very day i could not understand is why did it only sell 80,000 copys it`s one of GFR`s best. | | | | They had nothing to lose.... | Sometimes when a band knows it`s over, they will do one of two things; they will record and release a sloppy, unimaginitive album full of second rate songs just to satisfy the record company, or they will decide they have nothing to lose, and record and release a masterful album because they decided to go back to the reason they started in the first place, which is to make good music. Grand Funk chose the latter. They must have realized they weren`t on top of the world anymore, and the infighting and bickering had taken its toll. Completely changing gears, they employed the services of Frank Zappa and recorded GOOD SINGIN` GOOD PLAYING, in my opinion, a great album. Zappa knew GFR had it in them to make an album that brought to vinyl the concert sound they were famous for.He succeeded! Though it`s my opinion, Pass it Around is the best thing GFR ever put on tape. It`s an excellent song. A driving, relentless song in which the whole band burns. Another great song is 1976. Although negative in lyrical content, it still manages to get the message across that this is America, and if we want to, we can still be a great nation. Don`t let them take your Guns, they say in one song, and it makes perfect sense to me.There should have been two huge singles from this album: Pass it Around for one, and Release Your love, for another. This album should have sold 8 million copies and launched a world tour for GFR, instead, they broke up upon its release. Sad as it is, GFR called it quits and never again worked with Zappa. But, the bright side is, they left us an absolutely wonderful album. | | | | The End Was Near | | I have been a big fan of Grand Funk for years although I have to admit it was mostly from their first few albums. I have over the last couple of years began picking up some of their later stuff, and although some of it doesn`t quite match up with earlier albums I always found enough on them to make me happy to add to my collection (including their last hard to find "What`s Funk?" that was quite a different sound from anything else I`ve heard by them). But I recently purchased this one and heard it for the first time and was very dissappointed. This band in their hey day was one of the top live shows and party bands around. For an example listen to "Caught In The Act", which is one of my top three live albums ever. But this album except for a couple of songs has no life or energy. It sounds like something they forced themselves to make to fulfill some contract or something. I would highly recommend several of their earlier recordings to somebody that wants to find out what this band was all about, and only the hard core type fan that loves anything their favorite band puts regardless of how good it might be, or if it`s the last one missing from you Grand Funk collection to pick this up. | | | -- zzzz |
