Close, but no Cigar
I enjoy Grand Funk`s music. Several of their songs got a lot of airplay in the early 70s. The group was considered to be in the same genre as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and the group was typically unpopular with critics. This particular collection is one of the better ones available, though it remains less than perfect.

The easiest way to satisfy most Grand Funk fans would be to put all 20 songs that charted to 1976 into one collection. Then we would all be happy. I personally would have been happy with just one or two more songs from the aforementioned 20, particularly "Feelin` Alright." Until the 20 song collection of all charting songs happens, this CD is probably your best best. Of course, if you are missing a favorite song you have one of two choices. Either get the collection that contains your favorite song, or get the album that has that song, which is also a good idea.

Grand Funk was one of the hardest rock groups of their day. Sometimes described as the loudest rock and roll band in the world, Grand Funk was one of a very small number of bands that helped evolve rock into heavy metal. Fans of hard rock and classic rock should have at least one collection from this wonderfully talented group.

Enjoy!
Yet Another (pretty good) Grand Funk Compilation
If you want a single-disc compilation of Grand Funk Railroad, you basically have four discs to choose from: 1991`s Capitol Collector`s Series, 2001`s Very Best Album Ever, 2002`s Classic Masters, and 2006`s Greatest Hits (the one you`re looking at now). All four of them are actually pretty good, not to mention very similar. Here`s some of the goods and bads of Grand Funk`s "Greatest Hits."

THE GOOD
- I`ve always considered Grand Funk Railroad to be the only "heavy" American rock group who could hold a match to Led Zeppelin in the early seventies, and this collection gives you fourteen choice cuts from the band.
- In addition to the big hits like "We`re An American Band," "The Loco-Motion," and "I`m Your Captain;" you also get some underrated gems such as "Time Machine," "Footstompin` Music," and their only UK hit, "Inside Looking Out."
- All songs are digitally remastered from the original master tapes, resulting in excellent sound quality.

THE BAD
- Despite the number of great tracks, there are a few songs I would have traded for. I was particulary disappointed at the absence of two great cover songs, Dave Mason`s "Feelin` Alright" and the Stones` "Gimme Shelter" (the Classic Masters compilation does contain these, but it lacks "Inside Looking Out").

Overall, I would cautiously call this the best Grand Funk collection available. If you`re a fan of classic American rock, make sure you own something from this great band, even if it`s one of their regular albums or one of their two fantastic live recordings.
