Sure I knew Led Zeppelin, The Who, Ten Years After, Jethro Tull but somehow this sinister sounding (and looking) group eluded me. Anyways, I bought the album "Paranoid" and was amazed at the dark sounding songs which spoke of war, death, satan and evil. I hadn`t heard anything quite like it. The heavily distorted guitar of Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler`s pounding bass, Bill Ward`s drumming and Ozzy Osbourne`s rather depressing vocals were all it took and I was hooked. Immediately I ran out and purchased their self titled "Black Sabbath" album as well. This particular album seemed heavier than the first, particularly the songs "Iron Man", "Hand Of Doom" and "Electric Funeral". The standouts in my opinion are "War Pigs", "Paranoid", "Iron Man" and "Fairies Wear Boots". But in reality the album contains no filler whatsoever - something difficult to accomplish, but Sabbath did it and avoided the sophmore slump . Black Sabbath would continue to release a string of successful albums until the later part of the decade when Osbourne would leave the group to form his own band. Of note, another reviewer tends to feel the late Randy Roads (who was recruited from "Quiet Riot" to play in Ozzy`s band) is a better guitarist than Sabbath`s Tony Iommi. This reviewer couldn`t disagree more. Iommi`s style is far better than Roads and his guitar licks are tastier. You don`t have to be a shredder to be good! Though Iommi is no slouch in the speed department I feel he`s the superior of the two. If you must buy just two Sabbath albums I would suggest "Paranoid" and "Master Of Reality". Why Rhino has not remastered the Sabbath catalog is beyond me. The black boxset which includes all the band`s studio albums (Ozzy years) plus a dvd are all remastered. C`mon Rhino get on the ball! | | | | black sabbath paranoid | | great album if you wanna know where it came from this is where you should start. this album also contains some heavy blues influence. all of the songs are the best buy it now! | | | | CLASSIC METAL AT ITS BEST!!!!!! | | If you are a drummer, you must have this classic recording. Bill Ward is one of the greatest metal drummers of all time. His ability to play thunderous fills on his basic 5-piece marine-pearl SLINGERLAND DRUMS, not (LUDWIG)as most drummers regard to believe, was truely amazing. Bill Ward was endorsed by SLINGERLAND thru most of his career in Black Sabbath. Paranoid is one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. All the songs on this classic album are indispensible, war pigs, electric funural and hand of doom is a masterpiece. If your a Black Sabbath fan, this is one of the many albums worth adding to your collection. 5-STARS!!!!!!! | | | -- zzzz |
