One Every Steppenwolf fan should have. | | | | STEPPENWOLF 7: My favorite LP from the Wolf Pack. | | Purchased on vinyl in the early 70`s and long lost, I recently bought it again on CD. I saw the band at Cobleskill (NY) Ag | | | | Steppenwolf at their best... | | Despite John Kay`s ostensible misogyny and unapologetic contempt for hard drug use (both make for better song lyrics than a lifestyle, but either had a place in the mores of their listeners at the time), Steppenwolf`s music had wide appeal and 7 illustrates their power with an album that rocks from start to finish. On topic songs include Ball Crusher and their minor hit, Snowblind Friend, a poignant testament to the dead end of cocaine abuse. Other lost/shoulda been classics include Who Needs Ya, Renegade, Fat Jack, and Hippo Stomp. Granted, they took few risks here, relying on past success to formulate the bulk of the album. Consequently there`s nothing not to like and 7 may be considered their last really good album as a functioning band. Subsequent albums made clear John Kay`s disaffection with the other members as they did his solo ambitions. `For Ladies Only` had its moments, but 7 has definitely held up better over the years. If you`re a Steppenwolf fan, you know what I`m talkin` about. | | | -- zzzz |
