Nod Zine`s Picks

Dopes to Infinity
  • Alright, my first pick isn't new, its almost 10 years old, but at $ 10.99 this gem is a steal. Purists will tell you that this disc is where Monster Magnet started to lose them, but I disagree. Dopes to Infinity was an expansion of the Magnet sound, not a divergence. Tracks like Dopes to Infinity, Look to Your Orb, and King of Mars, provide a good midpoint between the raw energy of the earlier years, and the more polished sound of the later. MM`s Spine of God may be more classic, but if you're new to Magnet, this is the place to start. (I probably would choose Spine of God, if it was less expensive and easier to get a hold of)
Spine of God
  • Considerd by many fans to be Monster Magnet's best, this 1991 release simple refuses to disappoint..

Nick Fury's Phantom Eye  2000-10-21
  • Just got back from the 'secret' Monster Magnet show in NJ. Billed as Nick Fury's Phantom Eye this really wasn't Monster Magnet. Well, it was, but it wasn't. Dave Wyndorf started the show off by explaining that this was not the usual rock show, that it was a Rock and Soul Psychedlic show. On stage with Magnet were a keyboard player and a sound effects wizard "playing, I don't know what the hell all he's playing"; Wayne Larson played the keyboards, and I can't remember the other guys full name, so I won't fuck it up here. The Setlist was Kiss of the Scorpion(new), 5 Years Ahead of My Time, God Says No(new), Cry(new), Dinosaur Vacum, Baby Gotterdamerung, and a 10 minute version of Cage Around the Sun with, I believe, an electric sitar. It sounded like a sitar, it said sitar, and it had some funny extra strings to the left of the fretboard. I've never seen one to be positive though. Despite several technical difficulties, a stubborn mic and blowing out the PA, the band played a great powerful set. The last time I heard anyone play this loud at the Brighton was High on Fire. The new songs are great. I don;t know what they sound like on the record, but live they had all the power I've come to expect from Magnet. With some cool new twists too. Tim Cronin even treated us to his always ultra-trippy Psychedelic Light Show. The two guests tonight definitely added a new dimension to the show. Also playing were the Lemmings, Heavy Liquid and Lord Sterling. A great night all around.
